I moved to Naples last fall to lead Patty Baker Humane Society Naples, and it didn’t take long for one of our shelter dogs to find her way home with me. Roux has settled into every part of our routine, from morning walks to her favorite spot on the couch, and it’s already hard to remember what home felt like without her.

I’ve spent nearly 20 years in animal welfare, and the moment I still love most is watching someone walk out our door with a new leash or carrier and a slightly stunned smile. Last year, I got to be one of them. For the thousands of animals who come to us each year, adoption is a chance to become part of a family and experience those moments of their own.

Choosing to adopt is exciting, but adding a pet to your family is also an important decision. Whether you have shared your home with animals your entire life or are considering your first pet, knowing what to expect can make the process easier.

Every pet and every household is different, which is why personality, energy level and lifestyle are important considerations when choosing a companion.

Think about what everyday life looks like in your home. Are you looking for a dog who can join you for long walks or runs? Would you rather spend your evenings relaxing on the couch with an older cat? Do you have children or other pets at home? How much time can you devote to exercise, training and companionship?

Our Animal Care Team can answer questions about individual animals and help you find pets whose personalities and needs may fit your lifestyle. If you’re considering a cat, our von Arx Adoption Center is now dedicated exclusively to cats and kittens, giving adopters a quieter place to spend time getting to know them.

Once you find an animal you would like to meet, the adoption process gives you time to get acquainted. We recommend allowing at least 30 to 45 minutes for adoption counseling. The process may take a little longer if a meet-and-greet with a current pet is needed. Because animals adopted from PBHSN are already spayed or neutered, they can go home with their new families the same day.

Every adoption includes spay or neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations and a registered microchip. Adopters also get free access to Petszel, a post-adoption app that keeps your new pet’s shelter medical records in one place and sends care tips and local resources tailored to your pet through the first weeks at home.

Bringing a pet home is only the beginning. Even the best match can take time to settle in as a pet adjusts to new people, new surroundings and a new routine. Questions may come up along the way, from training and behavior to everyday veterinary care, and having support can make that transition easier.

That support can become especially important when life changes unexpectedly. A financial setback or personal emergency does not necessarily mean a family should have to give up a pet you love. We work to help families through those moments, whether that means pet food during a difficult stretch, temporary foster care during a crisis or access to veterinary care when a pet needs it.

Adoption gives animals of all ages, from puppies and kittens to adults and seniors, a fresh start. Each adoption also opens up space for another animal who needs care. Every year we serve thousands of dogs and cats, and we work alongside partner organizations to support Collier County’s animal community.

If you have been thinking about adding a pet to your family, come visit and meet the animals waiting for a home. Cats and kittens are available at both the main shelter and the von Arx Adoption Center, and dogs are available at the main shelter. I see it all the time: people arrive knowing exactly what they’re looking for and leave with someone they never expected.
